How Many Days a Year Do You Need to Use a Caravan Before Buying Makes Sense?

There is a lot to love about owning a caravan.

It is yours. Your bedding is already in it, the chairs and cooking gear are packed, you know how everything works and when Friday afternoon rolls around, you can hook up and go.

For people who travel regularly, that convenience has real value.

But caravans are also expensive assets, and with mortgages, groceries, insurance, fuel and everyday living costs all taking a bigger bite, it is worth asking one simple question before spending $80,000, $100,000 or more:

How many days a year are you actually going to use it?

What does an $80,000 caravan really cost?

Using the same assumptions as our cost calculator, an $80,000 caravan could cost approximately:

● Depreciation: $4,761 per year
● Insurance: $2,000 per year
● Maintenance: $500 per year
● Registration: $275 per year

That puts the estimated annual ownership cost at around:

$7,536 per year

And that is the favourable scenario.

You have bought it outright, you can store it at home for free and maintenance stays relatively predictable.

Finance the same caravan at an indicative 8% and you could add around $6,400 a year in interest.

Need storage at $300 per month?

That is another $3,600 a year.

In that scenario, annual ownership costs can move towards:

$17,536

That does not make ownership a bad choice.

It simply means the fewer days you use the caravan, the more expensive each of those days effectively becomes.

How does that compare with hiring?

At an average hire rate of around $200 per day:

● 10 days = $2,000
● 15 days = $3,000
● 20 days = $4,000
● 30 days = $6,000
● 40 days = $8,000
● 60 days = $12,000

On those figures, owning an $80,000 caravan outright starts to look competitive with conventional hire at around 38 days per year.

But there is now another option sitting between the two.

The middle ground

For occasional travellers, hire still makes sense.

If you are only getting away for a week or two each year, paying only for the days you use is hard to argue with.

But once you start getting towards 15–20 days a year, membership begins to change the equation.

An Unbound RV Weekend Warrior membership provides up to 24 travel days per year for approximately $3,420.

Compare that with around $4,000 for 20 days of conventional hire.

That is roughly:

$580 less per year

with up to:

4 extra travel days

And the benefit is not just the number of days.

Members can access premium caravans worth up to around $160,000, with features such as:

● True off-grid capability
● Large battery systems
● Extensive solar
● Premium interiors and appliances
● Better touring equipment and comfort

So someone who may have been considering buying an $80,000 caravan can potentially travel in something significantly more capable without having to own it.

The vans are professionally maintained and used within a community of members who are expected to treat every caravan as if it were their own.

That helps bridge the gap between traditional hire and the familiarity of ownership.

And membership still stacks up at higher usage

The numbers remain strong as travel days increase.

● Up to 45 travel days through membership: approximately $4,332 per year
● Up to 60 travel days through membership: approximately $6,060 per year
● Estimated annual cost of owning an $80,000 caravan outright: approximately $7,536 per year

So even at 60 days of travel a year, membership is still around $1,476 below the estimated annual cost of owning outright.

That is before finance or paid storage are added to the ownership side.

At that point, the decision becomes less about which option is cheapest and more about what you value.

If you want a van permanently packed at home, set up exactly the way you like it and available whenever you want it, ownership has clear advantages.

If you are more interested in maximising your travel while avoiding the capital and ongoing costs of owning, membership can remain compelling well beyond occasional use.

Why this matters more now

Cost of living has changed the way many people look at big purchases.

People still want holidays.

They still want weekends away.

They still want Easter trips, Christmas holidays and time travelling with the family.

But household money has more jobs to do.

The mortgage wants more.

The supermarket wants more.

Insurance wants more.

Then there is fuel, electricity, rates, school costs and everything else.

So the question is no longer just:

“Can I afford a caravan?”

It is also:

“Is owning one the best use of the money?”

That is a much more useful question.

So how many days do you really need?

As a rough guide:

Under about 15 days a year
Traditional hire can make plenty of sense.

Around 15–24 days
Membership starts becoming particularly attractive, with more available days for a similar or lower annual spend.

Around 25–45 days
Membership remains well below the estimated annual cost of owning an $80,000 caravan outright.

Around 45–60 days
Membership can still be cheaper than outright ownership, although the convenience of having your own caravan may become more important to you at this level of use.

There is no magic point where everyone should suddenly buy.

The right answer depends on how much you travel, how much you value convenience and how you want your money tied up.

Before you buy, ask one question

“How many days am I actually going to use it?”

If it is one or two trips a year, hire may be enough.

If you want regular weekends and holidays, membership may give you more travel for less money.

And if you place a high value on having your own caravan permanently packed and ready to go, ownership may still be worth the extra cost.

The important thing is to base the decision on how you actually travel, not how much you imagine you might travel when you are standing in a caravan showroom.

👉 Use the Unbound RV Cost Calculator to compare buying, hiring and membership based on your own travel habits.

Because the best option is not necessarily the cheapest one.

It is the one that gives you the caravan lifestyle you want at a cost that makes sense for you.

All figures are indicative only. Actual depreciation, insurance, finance, storage, maintenance, hire rates and other costs will vary.
